i am from the time of board games

from toy soldiers and plastic dice

to fake money and false totems

i am from the beaches of California

the wind blowing in my face

i am from living in the moment

rolling with the 'King' to hanging with my friends

i am from the 'Big Apple'

from its liberties and freedoms

to its pain of the past

i am from 'smile for the camera'

from looking my best

to having a rough day

i am from a family church
all-nighters and early sermons

i am from the fields of shin guards and cleats

to  jerseys and team practices

i am from the youth

from wrestling with our fathers

to our first days at school

i am from distant memories

from vacations with my uncle

to the blessings of my grandfather
